As streaming services continue to mine their movie IPs for series opportunities, it looks like Disney+ thinks they’ve found a winner by having Tim Allen (Home improvement, last man standing) return to Santa costume to star in & executive produce Santa (working title). The streaming series would see Allen reprise his role as Scott Calvin from the popular Walt Disney Pictures franchise. With production slated to begin in Los Angeles in March (per COVID-19 policies), the series finds Allen reunited with Last man standing Creator Jack Burdit, who will serve as showrunner and also executive producer (along with Kevin Hench, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina also on board as executive producers).
In the Disney Branded Television & 20th Television series, Calvin is about to celebrate his 65th birthday and realizes he can’t be Santa Claus forever. He begins to lose a step in his duties as Santa Claus and, more importantly, he has a family that could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two children who grew up at the pole. With plenty of elves, children, and family to satisfy, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new life and adventure south of the pole.
First depiction of the character in 1994 Santa, Allen would reprise the role of “Santa Calvin” in two sequels, 2002 Santa Claus 2 & 2006 Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause. Of course, Allen’s most well-known relationship to “The Mouse” is that of Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” franchise, but he would also appear in Disney live-action films such as Jungle 2 Jungle and the 2006 remake of The shaggy dog. And Allen was a popular face on the ABC side, first with the long run Home improvement then with Last man standing (before the series moved to FOX).
