‘The Watcher’ teaser: Jennifer Coolidge leads Ryan Murphy’s miniseries

Mia Farrow, Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts and Margo Martindale also star in the New Jersey limited series based on true events.

Meet Karen Calhoun. She is not like an ordinary Karen: she is a cool Karen, and is ready to sell you the house of your dreams. But Karen may or may not be a stalker…

Jennifer Coolidge transforms into Karen, an elite New Jersey real estate agent at the center of Ryan Murphy’s latest true-crime miniseries, “The Watcher.” Based on true events, “The Watcher” even has a fake zillow list for the infamous Westfield, New Jersey home that Karen Calhoun sold to an unsuspecting couple, played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale. Murphy and Emmy-winning Ian Brennan co-created and produced the series, which also stars Mia Farrow and Margo Martindale.

The official description for the series reads: “Dean (Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Watts) have just purchased their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after investing all of their life savings in the making the deal, they soon realize that the neighborhood is less than welcoming. There’s a goofy old woman named Pearl (Farrow) and her brother Jasper (Terry Kinney), who sneak into the Brannock home. and hide in their freight elevator. There’s Karen (Coolidge), the real estate agent and an old acquaintance of Nora, who makes them feel like they don’t really belong, and nosy neighbors Mitch (Richard Kind) and Mo (Martindale), who don’t seem to understand property lines.Their chilly reception quickly turns into a living hell in its own right when disturbing letters from someone calling themselves “The Watcher” start arriving, terrorizing the Brannock to the their breaking point as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets spill out.

Executive producers also include Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Bryan Unkeless, Eric Newman, Paris Barclay, Naomi Watts, Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost, and Scoop Wasserstein.

Coolidge has previously addressed feeling typecast for certain roles in his career ahead of his Emmy-nominated turn in “The White Lotus.”

“I was in this weird bubble for a really long time. And it just goes to show that you really should stick it out and not just repeat yourself, but I was still desperate for the job,” Coolidge admitted. “Most I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’ll get an offer again.'”

She added, “There was this really long rehearsal period. There was a period when, with the exception of an occasional Christopher Guest film, the scripts that came to my door were full of gold digger parts. It was some kind of stuff I had done before. I guess that’s what happens to us often, unless we direct it differently. I would have liked to be more involved in controlling my career. I just sat down, I was very passive.

Now Coolidge exerts his control over a possibly murderous Karen. You have to see it to believe it…

“The Watcher” will premiere this fall on Netflix.
