What is “The Staircase” about?

“The Staircase,” based on a true story, delves into the life of Michael Peterson, his quaint North Carolina family, and the mysterious death of his partner, Kathleen Peterson. Kathleen Peterson was found dead in a pool of blood at the bottom of the stairs at the family’s Durham, North Carolina mansion in December 2001. Michael Peterson was later named as the prime suspect in her death. In 2003, Peterson was convicted and sentenced to life after a three-month trial. That, however, was not the whole story.

The case remained in the public eye with great props for a documentary made by a French production team and Peterson maintaining his innocence through numerous appeals, and speculation about Kathleen Peterson’s death emerged. When it was revealed that a witness crucial to the prosecution had made false statements, a new trial was ordered. After serving 89 months in prison, Michael Peterson was able to free himself in 2017 after approaching a plea deal that allowed him to preserve his innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him, the formal verdict the attributing as culprit.
