‘The Sandman’ showrunner teases season 2 and ‘a spin-off miniseries’

The sand man Showrunner Allan Heinberg said he wants to adapt the entire comic book series in future seasons.

The Netflix series, starring Tom Sturridge as title character Morpheus, is based on the comic book series by Neil Gaiman. Originally published in 1989, the main series ran for a total of 75 issues over seven years.

Talk to NME at the show’s London premiere, Heinberg said they hoped to adapt the entirety of Gaiman’s books if the show was renewed for future seasons.

Asked how many seasons they have planned, Heinberg said, “We have as many as they let us. If enough viewers show up, we can continue for a while. We want to do it all, we want a spin-off miniseries. We’d like to do it as long as they have us.

The 10-episode first season covers 400 pages of Gaiman’s books out of 3,000 in total, according to Heinberg. Despite the source material’s ambitious subject matter, blending mythology and history with trippy visuals, the show apparently didn’t make many sacrifices when transitioning from the page.

“All the things that I was most afraid of, we found a way to do it,” Heinberg said. “There were times early on when I was like, I have no idea how we’re going to do this on camera, and we all got it.

“We only started with the first 400 [pages] this season, so we’ve reduced it a bit. But we hope to reach them all.

Like any fantasy show in recent memory, The sand man was billed as Netflix’s answer to game of thrones – although Gaiman thinks this show offers something more varied and surprising.

“I think what sets it apart is that it’s not quite the same,” Gaiman said. NME. “I like game of thrones but if you take a slice of game of thrones and you like it, the rest of game of thrones going to be a lot like that. There will be dragons, there will be fights, there will be betrayals, and there will be boobs, and that’s what you get for the rest.

“For The sand man, we have ten episodes. None of these ten episodes are like any of the other ten episodes. We’re gonna take you to dreamland, we’re gonna take you to hell, we’re gonna take you to a serial killer convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
