The Best Man limited series begins filming for Peacock

After more than two decades since the release of the original and nearly a decade since the sequel, The Best Man returns to the screen once again. It was announced in early 2021 that the franchise’s latest installment would be a 10-episode limited series commissioned by streaming service Peacock.

The show titled The Best Man: Final Chapters will be directed by the original screenwriter and producer of the first two films; Malcolm D. Lee. Lee will also be joined by former “Insecure” executive producer Dayna L. North and The Witcher’s Sean Daniel. The series would still be produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group for which Lee produced and directed two more successful comedy features; Girls trip and evening school.

The plot follows a group of friends as they navigate love, marriage, and friendship years after reuniting in college. The series is meant to tell a modern story “as relationships evolve and past grievances resurface in the unpredictable stages of midlife crisis and midlife rebirth.”

It is confirmed that The Best Man: Final Chapters will feature all original cast members: Regina Hall, Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Melissa De Sousa and Harold Perrineau except Monica Calhoun whose character died in the sequel; Man’s best vacation. All of these have since become household favorites for their performances in both films.

Both the original and the sequel were huge box office successes with the original grossing $34 million in 1999 and the sequel grossing $70 million in 2013. A third installment, The Best Man Wedding, originally slated for a 2016 release, was delayed indefinitely due to scheduling issues. Both films have since become classics in the romantic comedy genre, winning multiple Black Reel and NAACP Image awards.

After the reshoot was announced in February 2021, there was a period of silence until early March 2021 when a report confirmed that filming for The Best Man: Final Chapters had started well. Cast member, who plays Harold Perrineau (Julian Murch) was spotted filming a scene near the W Hotel in Hoboken, New Jersey. Perrineau was reportedly filmed as he casually climbed the block along the side of the hotel on River between the 2nd and 4th of March 15.

No other cast members were seen in or around the hotel premises. While it’s still unclear when filming actually started or when it’s expected to stop, it wouldn’t be a stretch to estimate that the official release will take place in 2023.

Note: We posted a photo of Nia Long with the director last week on IG saying that filming has started. It was probably from his IG. Malcolm also has several photos on his profile with cast members.
