The next Shondaland series is in a few weeks. Shonda Rhimes second Netflix effort (and the first one she created herself), Invent Annais set to drop on the streaming service in February.
With shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to get away with murder and more recently Bridgerton, it’s safe to say that Rhimes is one of television’s most influential creators. Like leGrio previously reported, it took her about four years since her lucrative deal with Netflix to drop her own series. Now fans will finally get a chance to see what she’s been up to, and from the looks of the trailer, it certainly won’t disappoint.
Rhimes’ latest series is based on the New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler. The article details the real story of Anna Sorokina russian woman pretending to be a german heiress Anna Delvey. Sorokin was ultimately convicted of theft and grand larceny in 2019. Pressler serves as an executive producer on the series.
The official synopsis for the series reads: “In Invent Anna, a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the legendary German Instagram heiress who stole the hearts of the New York social scene — and stole their money, too. But is she Anna New York’s biggest crook, or is she just the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark and funny love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter races against time to answer the biggest question in New York: who is Anna Delvey? »
The series also features an impressive cast, with Julia Garnier taking on the titular role. Garner won back-to-back Emmys for his role in ozarkwhich is also on Netflix. Laverne Coxwho played a vital role in one of Netflix’s first hit shows, Orange is the new black, joins the series as Kacy Duke, as does Katie Loweswho fans may remember as Quinn on Scandal.
In a recent cover of Time magazineRhimes talked about Invent Anna and what inspired her to write this series. “He was such a complex, interesting, unknowable person,” she explained. “If she had been a man, would she have had so many problems? Would people have even been so fascinated by her? If Anna Delvey had been what is generally called a hot chick, would people have been so outraged? »
Invent Anna releases February 11 on Netflix.
