SA filmmaker Oliver Hermanus will direct a limited series with Julianne Moore

South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus is the lead director of a new Sky and AMC limited series, Mary and George.

According DeadlineThe period drama series, based on a true story, is about powerful royal family favorites Mary Villiers and her son George.

The eight-part series will star Oscar-winner Julianne Moore as Mary Villiers, the Countess of Birmingham “who in 17th-century England fashioned her beautiful son, George, to seduce the king James I and become his all-powerful lover,” the publication reports.

Filming for the series is expected to begin in early 2023, with the show releasing later in the year.

Hermanus shared the story on Instagram with the caption, “Things to come! Mary and George have started prep, and we’re flying over.”

Earlier this year, Hermanus’ feature film Living with Bill Nighy, premiered at Sundance to rave reviews. The film is an adaptation of the 1952 Japanese drama Ikiru. The movie too screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Hermanus will also direct the First World War film, The history of soundwith Josh O’Connor (known for his role as Prince Charles in The crown) and Bafta winner Paul Mescal (who played Connell Waldren on the hit series normal people).
