Mahershala Ali’s limited series “The Plot” attracts several bidders

MUMBAI: Several outlets are bidding on the limited-edition adaptation of the hit novel “The Plot” with Mahershala Ali attached to the Endeavor Content star.

‘How to Get Away With Murder’ screenwriter Abby Ajayi is on board to write the series based on the psychological thriller from ‘The Undoing’ author Jean Hanff Korelitz about a struggling author and stealing writing teacher a brilliant idea of plot for a novel to one of his pupils.

The book is a smash hit, his career skyrockets, but he’s also drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an executioner who knows he brought up the idea for the story, reports.

Endeavor Content has put the eight-episode project together and bought it over the past few days from at least a half-dozen outlets, including Netflix, Hulu, HBO / HBO Max, and Amazon. He is known to have been received with enthusiasm and attracted multiple offers.

Layne Eskridge, the former Netflix and Apple TV executive who signed a production deal with Endeavor Content in January, is on board to serve as executive producer. Kristen Campo, a former head of Chernin Entertainment who now works under a deal with Endeavor Content, is also an executive producer, as is Ali.

Ali is a two-time Oscar winner, for “Moonlight” in 2017 and “Green Book” in 2019.

For television, he starred in the third season of “True Detective” in 2019 and was a regular on Netflix’s “Luke Cage” and “House of Cards”.

He appeared in the 2020 documentary special “Between the World and Me”, and he was a semi-regular last year on the comedy “Ramy”.

Besides buying “The Plot”, Endeavor Content itself is in the middle of a sales process. Parent company Endeavor reviewed offers submitted last week for 80% of the company.

Endeavor faces a year-end deadline to sell this stake in its industry under the January settlement agreement with the Writers Guild of America.

The WGA’s new franchise conditions for arts agents representing guild members prohibit agents or agencies from owning more than 20 percent of the capital of a production-distribution entity.

Endeavor Content’s auction has reportedly attracted both financial and strategic suitors and is expected to close this month.
