Pool boys in support donald trumpfrom the 2016 presidential campaign, another former president – albeit from one of the largest evangelical schools in the country – Jerry Fallwell Jr.will be the subject of a new Lionsgate TV limited series.
Producer Michael London (Snowfall, The King’s Daughter) signed a first contract with Lionsgate TV, its first project being the series centered on Falwell. The series is developed by London and Shannon Gaulding from Groundswell Productions on the rise and fall of Falwell and the empire he inherited from his father, the infamous Jerry Falwell Sr. The series is adapted from Gabriel Shermanfrom the Vanity Fair profile from earlier this year. This may be the first collaboration between the London team and Groundswell and Lionsgate, but the multi-year deal says it won’t be the last.
“There’s nothing better than having creative partners who are truly creative, as well as collaborative in smart,” London said in a statement. He continued: “The Lionsgate team is all of this and more. Shannon Gauldin and I are excited to embark on this new venture focused on the king of smart, unique and entertaining television that both companies represent.
Falwell built Liberty University, an evangelical school to which he received the keys from his father. Some accomplishments include the relevance of the school’s football team – placing them in Division 1 competition and beating Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl few years ago. Their last starting quarterback, Malik Willis, was a third-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft and just made his NFL debut in the Tennessee Titans game last weekend.
But what goes up must come down, and Falwell is certainly no exception. Falwell was a strong Trump supporter during his campaign and during his presidency — he even hosted Trump and some of his family members at his school, including asking the then-president to deliver the commencement address in 2017. scandal involving a pool boy, his relationship with Falwell’s wife, and a Miami hotel ownership fiasco led to Falwell’s resignation as president of Liberty University in August 2020.
Fun fact, Jerry Sr. was featured in Tammy Faye’s eyes – a film based on the rise and fall of another evangelical mega-church power couple, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker – and was played by Vincent D’Onofrio.
The limited series is still in the early stages of development and has no scheduled release date.
