Eragon TV show in development at Disney+

The Dragon Riders take flight! It has been over a decade since The inheritance cycle Christopher Paolini’s books have taken the young adult fantasy market by storm, but perhaps it’s time for all of us to reacquaint ourselves with the fantasy world of Alagaesia. According to a new report from Varietya television adaptation of the series is in development at Disney+.

Starting with Eragon, The inheritance cycle tells the story of a young farm boy named Eragon who discovers a dragon egg which hatches into a draconic companion he knows as Saphira. Together, Eragon and Saphira reclaim the old Dragon Rider title and embark on a global quest to stop the evil King Galbatorix. The series consists of four books: Eragon (2002), Elder (2005), breaking (2008) and Legacy (2011).

It’s not of Eragon adapted for the screen for the first time. In 2006 a film was released which covered the events of the first book. It failed to capture the magic of the novels and was fairly universally panned by critics and audiences alike, despite a fairly stacked cast that included Ed Speelers as Eragon, Rachel Weisz as the voice of Saphira, Jeremy Irons as the mentor of Eragon Brom, John Malkovich as Galbatorix and Sienna Guillory as the elf Arya.

Eragon and the Percy Jackson The TV series are both on Disney+

Despite the film’s failure, many fans held out hope that they would one day see a more faithful adaptation of The inheritance cycle. It was these hopes that led to an online #EragonRemake fan campaign, which aimed to get Disney’s attention. Apparently someone was listening.

Let’s hope this new Disney+ series is luckier than the movie. According Variety sources, Paolini is attached to co-write the series, with Co-Lab Studios’ Bert Salke serving as executive producer and 20th TV producer.

This is the latest in Disney+’s attempts to bring more YA fantasy stories to the small screen. The studio is currently producing a series based on Rick Riordan Percy Jackson series. Who knows what the next fantastic adventures will be?
