The new Hulu limited series Sick tells the tragic story of the US opioid crisis that has ravaged communities across the country since the introduction of pain relievers like OxyContin from Purdue Pharma. Based on Beth Macy’s non-fiction book Dopesick: the drug dealers, doctors and the drug company addicted to America, the series explores the impact of so-called safe pain relievers on people, as recounted by various characters from virtually all sides of the struggle. Michael Keaton (Dr Samuel Finnix)
Michael Keaton directs the Sick portrayed as Dr Samuel Finnix, a doctor in a rural coal town in Virginia who unintentionally leads dozens of his patients to lives of drug addiction and even death after being prescribed OxyContin, a drug he had been told to first said it was safe and not addictive. Perhaps the most recognizable star of the eight-episode Hulu series, Keaton has been a leading Hollywood man for over 40 years now, appearing in everything from Batman and Batman Returns To Projector To Spider-Man: Homecoming and dozens of other movies and TV shows. Peter Sarsgaard (Rick Mountcastle)
Peter Sarsgaard appears on Sick like Rick Mountcastle, one of the US Department of Justice attorneys pursuing a case against Purdue Pharma for the company’s role in making the highly addictive pain reliever. From her big screen debut in the 1995 crime drama dead man walking, Sarsgaard went on to appear in films like Boys don’t cry, Garden condition, and Jarhead, as well as a list of shows that includes The slaughter, The impending tower, and even an episode of Law and order. Sarsgaard also received great recognition for his performance in the 2003 biographical drama Broken glass including a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the former editor of The New Republic Charles Lane.
Michael Stuhlbarg (Richard Sackler)
Michael Stuhlbarg assumes the role of Richard Sackler, President and CEO of Purdue Pharma. Before joining the Sick actors, Stuhlbarg has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s most unique faces. Over the years he has appeared in everything from dark comedies like The Coen Brothers’ Effort in 2009 A serious man to historical figures of Lincoln, Hitchcock, Steve Jobs, and Trumbo, in which he portrayed acting legend Edward G. Robinson. Stuhlbarg also appeared in Doctor strange, The shape of water, Call me by your name, and several TV shows that include Boardwalk Empire (another historical figure of Arnold Rothstein), Fargo, and Your Honor.
Will Poulter (Billy)
Will Poulter plays Billy, a pharmaceutical representative involved in the OxyContin scandal. Before playing the young and naive character on Sick, builds a pretty healthy resume with titles like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, We are the Millers, and The maze Runner franchise. In the years that followed, Poulter appeared in the Netflix Interactive film. Black mirror: Bandersnatch and Environment. In October 2021, it was revealed that Poulter would play Adam Warlock in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which makes him another member of the cast of the Hulu limited series to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
John Hoogenakker (Randy Ramseyer)
John Hoogenakker appears in Sick like Randy Ramseyer, one of the American lawyers helping to prepare the lawsuits against Purdue Pharma for their role in the opioid epidemic. Since making his acting debut in an episode of Emergencies in 2005, Hoogenakker has spent most of his career on shows like Chicago fire, Colony, stone castle, and Jack Ryan by Tom Clancy, on which he played Matice in the first two seasons of the Amazon series. Outside of television, Hoogenakker has played roles in films like Contagion, Flags of Our Fathers, and Public enemies.
Kaitlyn Dever (Betsy Mallum)
Kaitlyn Dever stars as an opioid addicted coal miner named Betsy Mallum in Sick. While not her first role, Dever made a name for herself as Eve Baxter on the longtime sitcom directed by Tim Allen. Last man standing. Since then, Dever has appeared in various TV shows, specials, and movies, including Home Movie: The Princess Bride, Unbelievable, and Coastal elites. She’s also built a pretty nice list of movie credits, including Short term 12, The front runner, Handsome boy, and Booksmart. His most recent appearance was in the 2021 big-screen adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen.
Rosario Dawson (Bridget Meyer)
Rosario Dawson appears in Sick like Bridget Meyer, a DEA officer on a mission to fight the opioid epidemic and prevent those responsible from starting again. Dawson, who made her acting debut in the shocking 1995 coming-of-age drama Kids, has spent the last quarter of a century appearing in everything from 25th hour To City of sin and Clerk To Seven books. In addition to all of these movie roles, Dawson has also appeared on shows like daredevil (and other Marvel shows on Netflix) and The Mandalorian. She will then appear in the next Disney + spinoff series. Ahsoka.
Phillipa Soo (Amber)
Phillipa Soo appears in Sick like Amber, one of the first sales reps to bring OxyContin to doctor’s offices across the country. The Tony-nominated actress and singer has established herself as one of the most up-and-coming stars in theater with her hard-hitting portrayal of Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton before taking on the title role in the Broadway adaptation of Amelie. Since then, Soo has tried his luck in film and television by appearing in films like The gallery of broken hearts and Here and now as well as shows like The code and The bite.
Jake McDorman (John Brownlee)
Jake McDorman plays U.S. Attorney Jake McDorman in Sick. Prior to his portrayal of chief prosecutor in the Purdue Pharma case, McDorman built a rather solid filmography by appearing in films like Live free or die hard, American sniper, Lady Bird, and The happiest season as well as shows like Greek, Shameless, Unlimited, and the relaunch in 2018 of Brown murphy.
Ray McKinnon (Jerry Mallum)
Prolific actor Ray McKinnon appears in Sick as Jerry Mallum, the father of Kaitlyn Dever’s character. Over the years, McKinnon has appeared in dozens of films ranging from Apollo 13 To Ford vs. Ferrari, but he’s probably best known for his iconic performances as HW Smith on Dead wood and US Attorney Lincoln Potter in Sons of anarchy, a role he later reprized in the spinoff series Mayas MC
Cleopatra Coleman (Grace Pell)
Cleopatra Coleman stars as Grace Pell, an outspoken coal miner in Sick. Perhaps best known for her appearances on The last man on earth and In the shadow of the moon, Coleman spent most of the early 21st century switching between film and television with roles on shows like Famous White, The elephant princess, and The Eric AndrÃ© show.
Jaime Ray Newman (Kathe Sackler)
Jaime Ray Newman portrayed Kathe Sackler, one of the high ranking family members behind Purdue Pharma on Sick. Over the years, Newman has made appearances on everything from The Drew Carey Show To CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Motel Bates To Small fires everywhere and dozens and dozens of other shows. Newman has major roles on the likes of The punisher, Eureka, and VÃ©ronique Mars throughout his career.
Andrea Frankle (Beth Sackler)
Andrea Frankle appears on Sick like Beth Sackler, wife of Richard Sackler and one of the biggest names in the whole family. Throughout his career, Frankle has played roles on shows like Real detective, Underground, The purge, and Cloak and Dagger, as well as movies like Irresistible, Bullet in the head, and 21 rue du saut.
Will Chase (Michael Friedman)
By taking on the role of Michael Friedman, Marketing Director of Purdue Pharma in Sick is Will Chase, who has spent most of his career appearing on people’s television sets. Over the years, Chase has played major roles on shows like Nashville, Time after time, and Sharp objects, as well as smaller spots on the likes of Strange things, the devil, and The good woman.
Trevor Long (Rudy Giuliani)
And then there’s Trevor Long, who plays Rudy Giuliani in Sick. Prior to assuming the role of former New York mayor, Long established himself with recurring roles in Low winter sun and Ozark as well as smaller roles on The blacklist, Blind spot, and The resident. He recently appeared in an episode of the hit CBS crime drama FBI: most wanted.
