Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce to star in limited series based on the shocking true story of Spy Betrayal

Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce will star in a limited series based on a compelling true story.

The planned series is A spy among friends, which was originally supposed to have Dominic West (Thread, The case) and Lewis when news of the project first broke over a year ago. Pearce is now in the part that West was once attached to. For Lewis, this will be his first project since leaving the Showtime series. Billion.

A spy among friends, an adaptation of the 2015 New York Times bestseller of the same name by Ben Macintyre, will be a dramatization of the true story of longtime friends and spies Nicholas Elliott (Lewis) and Kim Philby (Pearce). MI6 agent Elliott was unaware that his longtime friend and MI6 colleague Philby had in fact become a double agent, betraying all British and American intelligence secrets to the Soviet Union in the early years of the cold War. In addition to passing large amounts of sensitive information to the Russians during his career as an intelligence officer, Philby was also responsible for informing two other spies suspected of espionage.

The Spectrum Originals and BritBox UK series are created and written by Alexander Cary, whose TV credits include Country, Lie to me, and the Taken series. Cary is also an executive producer with Patrick Spence, Nick Murphy and star Lewis, through his banner Ginger Biscuit Entertainment, among others. On board to direct all six episodes is Nick Murphy, who directed Pearce in the 2019 dark miniseries adaptation of A Christmas Carol and whose credits also include films Awakening and Some blood, and series The last kingdom and Save me.

The cast also includes Anna Maxwell Martin (Mother land, Course of action), Stephen Kunken (Billion, The Handmaid’s Tale) and Adrian Edmondson (Back to life, The pact).

“I am delighted to produce and play in A spy among friends“Lewis said in a statement.” These fabulous Alex Cary scripts take a close look at friendship – a friendship that has been blinded by love, class and belonging to the right clubs, and ended through betrayal and the death of thousands of people. It was a fantastic creative process that developed To spy and now I can’t wait to start filming with Guy and all the other brilliant actors who have happily agreed to join us.

Pearce said: “It is an honor to be a part of this exciting project. I have always been fascinated by the fascinating history of MI6 and taking this trip with Damian makes it all the more brilliant. I am also very happy to be working again with the wonderful and talented Nick Murphy.

A spy among friends started production in London this week and will also shoot in Romania. The series will have a world premiere exclusively on BritBox in the UK and on Spectrum’s on-demand platform in the US in 2022.
